Week 7 – # 11 It’s Big

on September 22, 2012

I have to say that my trip afforded me the opportunity to find something to fit this theme and I did not even know it existed.  How terrible is that!  I know about the Grand Canyon – carved by the Colorado River and I have been there.  I have also been to Kauai and visited the Grand Canyon of the Pacific.  But I never knew there was a Grand Canyon in Yellowstone and that it was known as the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.  It is carved by the Yellowstone River and downstream from Yellowstone Falls.

It has walls of gypsum and has some places where lime is incrusted white as snow, causing the sunlight to sun produce a dazzling effect. In other places the rock is crystalline and is mostly sulphur, of a dark yellow color, with streaks of red, green and black on either side.

It definitely is BIG.

I am so glad you submitted this beautiful photo. I was in Yellowstone with my son years ago but photography was not a huge interest for me at the time. I did, however, remember seeing this beautiful scene. Beautiful…Just Beautiful.

  2. Wonderful photo. Love the soft colors and the depth of field. Did you use a wide angle lens?

Beautiful place for sure. This is probably the most popular shot in the park and for good reason.
